After going through a series of procedures that we reviewed in the previous article, the mined mineral is sent to production, where is it turned into a diamond.
Diamond cutting is a high-tech, painstaking and creative process. At the lapidary enterprise, the mineral takes on its ideal shape and royal shine.
First of all, the expert determines what shape to make a diamond from mined mineral. There are actually a lot of forms. There are the most common (round and square), and there are unusual ones with different numbers of faces. The larger the diamond in size- the more important. Moreover, the fact, that sometimes it is more profitable to cut one large stone into several small ones, is surprising.
The mineral is scanned and using a computer program simulate the plane along which the cut will be made. Separation of the stone may also be a necessary measure, since they often have defects in the form of cracks and bubbles. They have a lot of internal tension, that is, with time they can only increase. This significantly reduces the cost of the mineral, because it can lose weight. Such stones belong to the group of so-called «dive» diamonds. They are big and cheap. Therefore, it is cut into several small parts. For understanding the prospects, one large and cheap stone can cost about 60 thousand dollars, but a cut will allow to get about $ 300 thousand for 4 small diamonds.
The price of the largest and most complex stones can reach several million dollars. Work on their completion takes several months.
How is the diamond divided?
First of all, the diamond, that should be cut, is cut with a special laser for a long time. Then the obtained pieces are compared with a model that was calculated on a computer. After this procedure, the stones fall into the rough grinding workshop, where they are methodically ground together on a machine. It is here that they get their form. Why exactly each other? The fact is that diamonds are incredibly hard and therefore they can only be processed with another diamond. This is done in a special apparatus, which is fully computerized and worked in time and diameter.
Each future diamond goes through many stages of processing:
– roughing and finishing roughing;
– many stages of cutting and grinding, polishing and washing.
The work of the cutter requires special skills and qualities. These are rare specialists in their field. According to statistics, out of 50 people who learned to cut, after 5 years no more than 5 people remain. But after 20 years, if one of these 5 turns out to be one real master – this is excellent.
Interesting fact. Modern technology allows to get stones of 0.02 carats, 0.03 carats are very small diamonds, which are called diamond dust. Each of them without fail has 57 faces. As a rule, they are used to sprinkle something. For example, they take a bunch of such stones and sprinkle watches with them.

Why are diamonds so expensive?
In a previous article, we already considered that in order to obtain a diamond it is necessary to use a huge amount of human, technological and other resources. Diamond was storing in the earth for millions of years and waiting in the wings. Then a person applies all his knowledge and skills, the most complex and expensive technique to turn this raw material into a work of art. The diamond industry is a high-tech industry for luxury. It involves scientists, engineers, workers, security guards, sorters, and so on. For getting a beautiful stone, it is needed to make a huge amount of labor and effort.
How do diamonds get a unique shine?
When it hits the surface of the stone, part of the light is reflected, and part is absorbed. Any white ray passing through a diamond decomposes into spectral components: red, blue, green. Only 7 colors. This phenomenon is called dispersion. The longer the path that the beam travels inside the diamond as a result of multiple reflections from its faces, the more pronounced the dispersion. Refracted and spectrally decomposed luminous flux at the exit is mixed with white color reflected from the surface of the stone. This is what creates the visual effect of diamond shine.
